What Diah Has Shared: Disability History Association Graduate Student Scholarship

As part of our commitment to promoting the work of disability historians, DHA is proud to announce an annual graduate student scholarship to attend professional academic conferences. This award is not restricted by the geographic location or type of professional academic conference. The fellowship committee will award either 2 applicants $250 or one applicant $500, depending on strength of proposals and need. The Association will cover expenses to convert currencies if necessary.

To apply for this scholarship applicants should provide a one-page (roughly 250- word cover letter outlining when, where, and what kind of conference will be attended. Applicants should clearly explain their reason for wanting to attend the conference and what benefits are anticipated by this experience. For example, a candidate may have been accepted to present a paper or may want to interview for jobs at the conference; another may want to do both or may want to learn more about subjects presented that relate to his/her own work.

This year's award covers Fall 2010 through summer 2011; the due date for applications is September 10, 2010. The current scholarship review committee this year includes DHA members Mike Rembis, Susan Burch, and Graham Warder.

Awardees will be announced on the H-Dis listserv. In accepting the scholarship, winners commit to writing a brief article (500-750 words) about the conference for the next DHA newsletter appearing after the event.

The International Institute of Social Entrepreneurs (IISE) a programme being implemented by Braille Without Borders in Trivandrum , Kerala , India successfully trained the first batch of students from 12 countries in 2009 and the second batch including 29 participants from 18 different countries, started their course in January 2010. What Diah Has Shared: Disability Studies Ph.D. Fellowship at UIC

The Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Disability Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago announces the establishment of the new Ethel Louise Armstrong (ELA) Endowed Ph.D. Fellowship for women with physical disabilities. The Fellowship is made possible through the generosity of Margaret A. Staton, the founder and President of the ELA Foundation and a disability advocate who has devoted her life to ensuring that no one will experience the disability prejudice, discrimination, and exclusion that she and her peers endured in the past.

The Fellowship is named in honor of Ms. Staton's grandmother, Ethel Louise Armstrong, who exemplified self-determination and resistance in the face of socially imposed constraints. As a young woman with a physical disability growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, Ms. Staton was inspired by her grandmother' s insistence on excelling in postsecondary education despite social conventions during her time that denied women opportunities for school and work. Ms. Staton earned her M.Ed in counseling, worked in Washington DC to promote accessibility, and, in 1994, founded the ELA Foundation to promote full inclusion of people with disabilities in the world.

Recipients of the Ethel Louise Armstrong (ELA) Endowed Ph.D. Fellowship will receive payment of tuition in the Disability Studies program at UIC and an annual stipend of $18,000. The funder stipulates that applicants must be women with physical disabilities (UIC also has funding options open to other under-represented students.). Applicants for the ELA Fellowship must also meet admission requirements for entrance into the Disability Studies program. The application deadline for Fall 2010 domestic admission is May 7, 2010. What Diah Has Shared: Google Europe Scholarship for Students with Disabilities

Access to knowledge is our passion. When it comes to higher education for promising scholars, we do not want anything to stand in the way. That is why we are pleased to announce the Google Europe Scholarship for Students with Disabilities. Google is committed to helping the innovators of the future make the most of their talents by providing scholarships and networking retreats for computer science students with disabilities. This scholarship aims to help dismantle barriers that keep students with disabilities from entering computing, encourage them to excel in their studies and become active role models and leaders in creating technology.

Multiple scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic performance and demonstrated passion for computer science. A group of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD students will be chosen from the applicant pool. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of researchers and engineers. The scholarship recipients will each receive a € 7,000 (or equivalent) scholarship for the 2010/2011 academic year.

In June 2010, all scholarship recipients will be invited to visit Google’s Engineering Centre in Zurich for an all-expenses-paid networking retreat. It will include workshops with a series of speakers, panels, breakout sessions and social activities, and will provide an opportunity to meet and share experiences.

Eligibility requirements

Candidates must be:

  A student entering the final year of a Bachelor’s degree, or enrolled in a Master’s or PhD programme (or equivalent), in 2010/2011.

  Enrolled at a University in Europe. Citizens, permanent residents, and international students with disabilities studying at a University in Europe are eligible to apply.
• 
  
  
  Studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics, or a closely related technical field.
• 
  
  
  A person with a disability. The term persons with disabilities is used to apply to all persons with disabilities including those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.

How to apply

Please complete the online application and submit all requested documents by 15th March 2010. All application documents must be in English. Students may be invited for a phone interview following the initial review. We provide other interview opportunities for students who cannot use phones. You will be required to submit the following:

  Answers to the following short essay questions (suggested word count is 400-600 words per question):

1. Describe a significant technical project you have worked on. If you have worked on a major independent research project (such as research for a Master’s or PhD programme), please describe that work here. Give an overview of the problem and your approaches to the key technical challenges. If this was a group effort, specify your individual role and contributions.
2. What are you passionate about? Tell us which barriers you have had to overcome to be successful in your studies and in your life and how did you fulfill your passion? Feel free to think broadly and examine the many ways you overcame barriers and fulfilled your passion.

• Enrollment confirmation for 2010/2011 or confirmation of graduation date. Please include with your application an official enrollment confirmation or a confirmation of your graduation date issued by an official authority of the university e.g. your departmental administrator or a professor.

  Recommendation letters.
  Two strong referral letters from individuals who are qualified to evaluate your accomplishments, e.g. from a professor, adviser or supervisor.
